Every Summer, thousands of tweens across Canada gather to see their idols perform onstage. They scream, they dance, and they cry more than we probably ever did when Guns & Roses was still a cool band. It's the Big Ticket Summer Concert, and we were invited by Family Channel to design 2014's 'night-themed' on-air package and promo for the event.
The biggest test was to think once again as pre-pubescent tweens: what's hot, what's not (Barbie is OUT, people; so is Justin Bieber), what the current tastes in fashion are, what the best grilled cheese and milkshake is in town, and what visual language most appeals to today's tech-savvy under-14's.
For the the shoot itself, there were a couple hurdles to overcome; the first was to shoot a promo with full summer vibes during a frozen April; the second was to encourage the kids to let loose and create the concert's euphoric atmosphere months before the actual show happened. That said, the shoot of course was a blast. We can't remember a production where we had this much fun filming and dancing! Plus, having a client as flexible and collaborative as the folks at Family Channel allowed us to take the project to new, awesome horizons, making it a piece not just enticing for a tween's eyes.
In terms of technicalities, we shot with the Red Epic, and we used Cinema 4D, 3Dsmax, After Effects, and Flash for the 2d animation and titles. The footage was coloured using Lustre.
Revisiting our inner-teen was tough, but we must say, it was also a laugh. Hmm - yep - that dichotomy sounds about right for the age bracket! We hope you enjoy our Director's Cut featured here ;)
